In a national referendum the people of Switzerland voted to introduce an electronically collected, distance-dependent road toll for heavy goods traffic.

This decision was transformed into a reality on January 1, 2001. All Swiss and foreign vehicles with a maximum total laden weight of 3.5 t or more which are used for goods transport are now subject to this fee whenever they travel on the public road network of the Swiss Confederation and the Principality of Liechtenstein.
